Chairs used for prolonged sitting at office workstations should be selected to ensure that the user is appropriately supported. All chairs selected should meet the requirements of AS/NZS 4438:1997 Height Adjustable Swivel Chairs, be AFRDI 6 certified and meet the following requirements:

  • 5 point base
  • Castors for carpet; gliders for non-carpet surfaces
  • Height adjustable by touch mechanism
  • Padded seat
  • Seat length: edge of seat is 2 to 3 fingers from back of knees (seat slide mechanism is preferable as it allows different users to adjust accordingly)
  • Adjustable backrest tilt (to enable backrest to be locked into upright position)
  • Adjustable backrest height
  • No arms, or if necessary, arms must be adjustable in height and direction so that they do not obstruct close access to the desk.

Mesh-backed chairs do not generally provide sufficient lower back support and are not recommended by UNSW Health and Safety.

UNSW’s preferred supplier of office furniture is Sturdy Framac (Lance Spouszta: 0418 330 687/ 02 8760 8300). For most individuals, UNSW Health and Safety recommends the Gregory Inca chair, which is available through Gregory Commercial Furniture (Kathleen Kluska: 0418 479 387/02 8808 0400).
